These preserved strands of hair belonged to the Woolly Mammoth, which roamed the mammoth steppes of Europe, Asia, and North America during the Late Pleistocene, around 20,000 years ago. The strands have been stored in a scientific jar and displayed in a museum quality deep box frame.
Thick, coarse, and reddish-brown in colour, the hair was adapted to insulate against sub-zero temperatures. It is organic material, preserved in permafrost, and offers rare insight into the biology and environment of Ice Age megafauna.
Recovered from Siberia, the specimen has been gently cleaned and stored in stable conditions, preserving a direct trace of an animal that once walked beneath glaciers and across frozen plains.
